The Magic of Disney

Fresh of our wonderful trip to Disney with my in-laws, brother-in-law, and families I could not resist the title, but there is more to the title as you will read. We spent two days actually in Disney’s Magic Kingdom with our four boys and my two nephews packing in as much as we could. I pushed our double stroller with our two-year old (Sam) and most of the time our four-year old (Grant) plus cooler bags, cameras, etc. I estimate I was pushing at least 100 lbs worth of load up and down hills and over curbs both days. When I wasn’t pushing the stroller I was doing squats and deadlifts of our two-year old… I am guessing around 30 lbs of weight. Believe me I am not complaining about this, I am just explaining the amount of exercise incurred over those two days.

I must admit I was a little apprehensive about the vacation from a food perspective. I started preparing myself mentally before the trip not to think of it as a Vacation from eating properly. As such I was mentally prepared for the temptations of Gas Stations, Snacking, Fast Food, more Snacking, and so on. Special thanks to my Wife and my Mother-in-Law here for thinking of me and preparing and bringing foods that were healthy. The one thing I was not prepared for was the hunger!!! Those two days and the day after I could not get enough to eat, I felt like a pig grubbing around for food of any type. It was all I could do to just keep eating the healthier choices; apples, oranges, bananas, corn chips, salsa, guacamole, granola bars, scrambled eggs, dried apples, dried apricots, and I could keep going. With all my eating I was confident that there would be either flat results or weight gain in my future.

Then there was eating at Disney, when you spend 12 hours in the park you are bound to run out of food. Once the lunch meat was deplinished and snacks running low we had to eat. Believe it or not we found a Salad that was not too bad in Frontier Land (for those familiar with the park). I ate the salad and drank water, I was full, refueled, and ready to keep trucking! Then came the Character Breakfast at Ohana resort, all you can eat eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, fruit, and potatoes. I ate lots of potatoes, scrambled eggs, and fruit. Although I was happy with my choices I was not sure about the quantity, but I was so hungry I felt I needed to eat. Last, but not least, there are the weak moments…. I ate a half biscuits two-day while on vacation, one brownie, and one handful of Vanilla wafers. Ok, confession is good for the soul, glad that’s done!!!

Overall, thanks to my Wife and Mother-in-Law I had plenty of good choices and moral support to make it through the eating side of vacation. So, the reason you read and the reason I write this blog, weigh in results! I weighed in Monday morning around 7am on my usual scale, keep in mind we drove 13 hours back from Disney on Sunday. My weight total was 234, that is a net loss of 4 lbs since my previous weigh in…. I WAS SHOCKED!!!! That is a total weight loss of 25 lbs since Thanksgiving 2013 (read the “about” section to learn about Thanksgiving 2013). That is why I say the MAGIC of DISNEY, I still can’t believe that kind of weight loss after my heavy eating. The choices were not bad and I assume the exercise offset the quantity. Moral of the story is – DONT FORGET TO PLAN YOUR MEALS WHEN GOING ON VACATION! Don’t take a Vacation from eating healthy, the choices are there  you just have to dig a little deeper to find them sometimes.
